Section 28 and its Afterlives
Section 28 and its Afterlives is a research project at the University of Exeter. Through oral histories with LGBTQ+ people in the South West, the project aimed to recover and record the experiences of those most directly affected by this legislation – and to raise awareness of the legacies of Section 28 today.
As part of the project, Chloe ran workshops during 2023-2025 to provide a space to reflect on Section 28 and its legacies. Participants engaged with this challenging period of recent LGBTQ+ history in a hands-on, empowering way, by using collage to create a personal response to a range of historical material.
Participant artwork
The first gallery shows artwork produced in response to one of the homophobic headlines during the period that Section 28 was enforced. In the workshops, Chloe asked participants to explore the sensitive material carefully, taking notice of their reactions to the rhetoric of the period. This formed the basis for participants’ collages. The second gallery shows the breadth of fantastic work produced from the workshops.
